My high school friend Tonia and I opened a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mizuna.com\" type=\"link\" id=\"www.mizuna.com\">vegetarian restaurant<\/a> in Spokane in our early twenties. Yes, it still exists! Ten years later, I started a catering business called Feast, and then in 2011, my food blog, Feasting at Home, was born. Journey<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I was raised in Los Angeles by immigrant parents-my Finnish mother and Egyptian father- both right &#8220;off the boat&#8221;. They both loved to cook and travel, and this allowed me to experience many different cuisines. When it came to cooking, they were extremely frugal, making everything from scratch and wasting nothing. They often hosted dinner parties, with an abundance of dishes, mostly made of plants. I learned early on how food brings people together, and that it doesn&#8217;t need to be fancy. <strong>They taught me how simple, humble ingredients could become a feast.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I prefer to eat organic, seasonal, whole foods-grown locally,<\/strong> <strong>if possible. <\/strong>As a chef, I'm inspired by fresh, local produce, picked at its <em>peak of flavor<\/em>. This is one simple thing that will immediately elevate your meals! Cooking and eating with the seasons is very grounding to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though I had a vegetarian restaurant for 10 years and often eat plant-based during the week, as a chef, I love experiencing<em> everything<\/em>- so I don&#8217;t like to box myself in with a label. \ud83d\ude09 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>There are many paths to health.<\/strong> The food scene has become extremely tribal, dogmatic, preachy, divisive, and politicized. I will never try to convince you to eat one way or another. We are all different, and our bodies have varying needs. My husband thrives with a plant-rich, higher-protein diet, &nbsp;but I do better with a lower-fat, high-fiber Mediterranean diet. I love sharing things I stumble upon, but there&#8217;s never any pressure! I have no agenda here-&nbsp;<em>I just<\/em> <em>want your food to taste good- haha!  <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-globally-inspired-recipes\">Globally Inspired Recipes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>With a Coptic Egyptian father and a Finnish mother, I am the daughter of immigrants. My childhood was a culinary journey through the Middle East, the Mediterranean, and Northern Europe. Growing up in Los Angeles, a quick drive could take us to the flavors of Mexico.
